The math
- Metric: fuel (L) = distance × consumption ÷ 100 · cost = fuel × price/L
- Imperial: fuel (gal) = distance ÷ mpg · cost = fuel × price/gal
Consumption numbers: a small hatchback ≈ 5–6 L/100km, midsize sedan ≈ 7–9, SUV ≈ 9–12, heavy truck 15+. Your real number comes from the trip computer or: liters filled ÷ km driven × 100.
Quick ways to save
- Smooth acceleration and steady highway speed (90–100 km/h) beat hard braking + speeding by 10–20%.
- Tire pressure: under-inflated tires cost ~3% efficiency. Roof racks cost more at highway speed.
- Idling burns ~0.5–1 L/hour — switch off for stops longer than a minute.
